Well i am looking for someone to sell ads on a website via the telephone i.e telephoning people and trying to sell ad space.

For every ad sold that person receives a commission.

I don't know. I mean, you'll have to see if the website openly displays their phone number, I guess. This is the first I've heard of this strategy. :D

I think what he means is telesales, phoning people up and asking if they want to buy space on his site. That's illegal here in the US but not sure if the UK has a donotcall list?

MrLoofer, that's not illegal in the U.S. Unsolicited phone calls to homes is illegal. Calling up a business is perfectly fine. :)

Herm.. so overall you want to find someone to do this jov for you isn't it? Why don't you just ask any telephonies company to do it. I think they should have this kind of service offer.

About twice a month, I will get phone calls from agents selling Ads on google, yahoo, etc. Why you don't try these agents?

If you register your business to your personal address you are fair game. Telemarketers are generally fairly expensive. I think a decent-quality telemarketing firm charges $20-30 per hour for outbound calls. 50-60 calls per hour. Plus you have to buy the customer lists. You probably will see a yeild of about 3% or less.

This is of course only my view of it. You may be able to find better economics elsewhere.

Also - make at least 20 calls yourself to develop a good script. What works, what doesn't. That way you don't throw hundreds down the drain with a script that doesn't pay off.

thanks for all the replies...phoning businesses in the UK is not illegal, its only illegal if they have registered with the telephone preference service and have indicated they do not wish to receive marketing calls.

One more thing - I think what you are doing is a great idea. The internet has made information flow so fast that many markets, like online advertising have become efficient. i.e. just like on the NYSE, you can't buy a $10 stock for $5 or sell a $10 stock for $15... the market is so efficient that everyone knows the stock is at $10, so that is the price that you have to sell/buy at.

But, by going outside the internet to sell your ads, you may get some less educated advertising consumers who may be willing to pay more than the internet market value to advertise on your site. Maybe not, but let us know how it goes.

My company specializes in mass voice broadcasting and will leave recorded messages on answering machines, what would you think the response would be if we called 10,000 businesses, dropping a message on their anwer machines advertising our message broadcast service?

Totally agree with Leon, especially about getting customers that don't know what the going rate is. I paid $3k for a billboard sign for my first aid business that got about 200,000 fans to view it. I thought that was a pretty good deal, about 1.5 cents per view. Paid for itself as well, and that same ad now goes for $5k. My point being that talking to a brick and mortar business who is used to paying 1.5 cents or more per impression could be an easy sale for half a cent per impression. Now your talking $5 cpm.

Before hiring someone you may just want to invest a few hours of your time doing it yourself. Experiment with your pitch, and then when you got it down hire someone. If you can't sell it yourself goodluck getting someone else to sell it.

I had a friend who was trying to find telemarketers for his cc merchant account business. He thought telemarketing companies were way expensive (he has a startup), and I have recommended him craigslist.

He's posted about it to craigslist (only commission no hourly rate or salary) and he's received so many applications. Now he has 5 college students working for him per commission based. Everybody is happy.

It may not be the same in your case, but craigslist is worth a try.

    good luck

For successful sales & prospecting call you should know "what to say exactly" and eliminate resistance, I found few telephone marketers are very expert on this. :)
