Yesterday morning's drama unfolded when police in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, spotted a stolen high-performance Ford Falcon XR6. It ended when the pair aimed a rifle at police and tried to steal a patrol car before being tackled to the ground by two unarmed officers and a police dog. "It was like one of those video games the kids play where they steal a car and shoot at police," said Inspector Karl Wright St Clair, of Tauranga. Asked if he was making a direct link between video games and yesterday's incident, he said: "Well, they don't come up with these things by themselves." Mr Wright St Clair would not name the games he was referring to, but there are several on the market, including the controversial Grand Theft Auto, in which players steal cars and tear through city streets causing death and destruction. more: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/4106551a6662.html :hehe: :imho: I keep going back and forth about whether I believe video games can actually influence bad behavior in teens or adults, but have yet to try and emulate one myself (well there was that one time...)
Duh!! I have been playing All the Gory Video games like DOOM, Quake, UT, GTA, HL, to name some, since I was 14, and all I've killed so far are Mosquitoes, Roches and Rats. I dont think Video game should be blamed for anything, its just a person's mind that acts in the specific way.
was loads of research done on this and they concluded that they dont no =). how ever i wrote a paper on this, for university and my views and research took me to believe that video games causes bad behavior. males in the teens are a lot more likely to carry out a crime compared to females after watching or playing games.
I guess I'm somewhat inclined to think that some impressionable people might be influenced by video games, but then what about video games that promote positive beghaviors? Are "we" influenced by those also?
With guns so readily available in the US, I am surprised there isn't more shootings. Yoiu should rip apart the US bbill of rights and amend 'the right to own firearms'.
Video games/films/music can't influence anyone unless their is an underlying mental illness or something so it isn't the games/films/music fault, it's just an excuse.
What nonsense! Its a freedom that has cost counteless lives commited by young thugs and maniacs both in streets, homes and even junior schools. It was designed to protect people but has instead done what it was supposed to stop.
It's not mental illness, it's called being responsible for one's behavior. i only hope they get the maximum punishment allowed.
oh ok look, teen plays GTA then teen steals a car, teen gets chased by cops, teen pull gun to steal another getaway car, aint that the same as Bonny and Clyde before GTA? i mean they stole cars and shot at cops, i dont remember any top cop bitching about them playing to much GTA on an Xbox. what utter crap. it's just brain dead fools (the Top Cops) trying to look smart in public, by blaming the 1st thing that pops in his 4 braincell head and putting his foot in his mouth while doing it.
It must be the video games fault. Heck everytime someone steals a car is GTA's fault. Everytime someone... People have to start taking responsibility for themselves and especially their children.
yea and cops need to stop trying to look to smart, they only look more stupid than they already are. and my bro's a cop so i know what i'm talking about.
You already have to be pretty mentally disturbed to play a video game and think "Hey! I'm going to go out and kill cops!" I don't believe video games can negatively affect a person of sound mind. I've played tons of violent video games. They didn't want to make me go out and shoot old ladies and steal cars.
India has a strict firearm policy, but still we hear about the same things (Killing, Robbery blah blah) everyday, that too in plenty.. So it doesnt matter whether a country have strict or lenient laws and policy. These things happen everywhere.
if video games effected what we do the pacman generation would all be munching little blue pills and listening to repetitive music... but yeah.. im from new zealand and crazy stuff like this goes on all the time now.. shitty meth is allover the country and ive heard of kids in my area as young as 13 being full out addicts stealing anything they can and trading it for crack kids used to be able to go into any dairy and get legal dance party pills containing BZP(banned pretty much all other countries) and anything else they wanted since they were legal for all ages.. it was only a couple of years ago they were made 18+.. ive tried these pills and they are just like a mix of crack ad extacy.. give you intense energy.. grinding teeth.. bad comedown etc it sounds like these kids just had too much crack and wanted something to do..
Heard this before....way back in the 70s and 80s rock music was blamed for violence among teens, later heavy metal, etc. In fact those who get pumped by listening to music or playing video games don't just go out and start shooting people. Those that do are criminals. Most other people get their adrenaline out while playing that game...later on they chill out. My brother is one of those who pops open a beer and sprawls in front of the TV!
What.. they didnt? Man I must be extremely sick, cuz the video games made me kill several Mosquitoes, Roches and Rats and I killed them very very brutally. I smashed mosquitoes, I poisoned Rats, I ran over roches.. and you know what?? I've even stolen cookies.. Video games made me do it..
I bet it wasn't the video games at all, he probably just had a bad chalupa from Taco Bell and that made him upset. IMO, the only way entertainment can directly influence you is if your mind is weak and your parents are even weaker.
While I do blame newer parents for being weak and not discipling their kids, in their defense the laws are such these days that you take a real chance in disciplining your kids, you could be arrested or charged with child abuse (and it's not just for hitting your kids.. you can't even use harsh language).
