Derek Jacobs, 18, died in a motorcycle accident yesterday morning (9/30/06). He was a prodigy and was set to graduate with an engineering degree this year. Only after attending Florida International University for two years.

He first gained notority when he was 12 when he became certified by Microsoft as a systems engineer. He wanted to be a nerosurgeon when he grew up.

But at age 14 he and hsi family went on live TV to get VeriChip IDs, made by Applied Digital Solutions.

VeriChip IDs help store medical information.

I remember seeing pictures of this kid and his family back when they had the chips implanted. I strongly oppose the idea of RFID in humans, but that can be saved for another thread. That's a real tragedy, he had such a bright future.

This raises more questions as to whether he had a motorcycle license or any motorcycle training or experience.

    http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/c...brFatal_1001.html?cxtype=rss&cxsvc=7&cxcat=17

If any of the above were not the case, this makes motorcycles look bad. When the reality of it is, MS training does not make one a motorcyclist.

Sad story, but I gotta wonder about the details.

That's a good example of how motorcycles are unsafe. I think they should be banned from the US, or at least a law should be created to raise the age for driving one. A LOT of teens die in the US, young teens, from motorcycle accidents. One that I kinda knew just died this summer from one..

though it is a tragedy whenever it happens, I think the likelihood that would be banned is about as probable as guns being banned from the US!!

too many people love to ride their guns if you know what I mean.

It's dangerous regardless - it's one thing for inexperienced riders to crash on their own accord (inexperience/foolishness) but all you need is for some F-nut not to see you and boom, you're a stain on their bumper.

this is why my mommy never let me ride :p

I suspect that we will find that he was unsafe, not the motorcycle.

People die in cars and trucks and walking across the street too.

Are you willing to have those things banned too?

Always sad to lose such a bright mind. Sounds like he may have been inexperienced though, not fair to blame it on bikes in general.

Hmmm... and not long ago a Canadian math prodigy, around 16 or 17, was found dead. Are aliens from the future time-travelling to kill the people who would advance Earth technology and thus stop human domination of the galaxy?

The answer after this commercial brake.

Smart, but not smart enough to realize the dangers of riding a motorcycle.
