I strenuously support the right to the private practice of faith, or no faith.

I strenuously object to the notion of teaching "Creationism" as part of a publically funded science curriculum.

I strenuously object to a "science" teacher literally burning a brand, a Christian cross, on his student's arms to drive a point home. In other words,

That guy's "Location field" needs to be set to prison for a couple of years.

He wasn't really branding them, of course. Whatever it was had a temporary effect that lasted only 3-4 weeks.

I am not familiar with this "high-frequency generator" technology which can (apparently) burn skin, but it sounds an awful lot like something I wouldn't want used on me.

I can't believe that his being fired is an issue. That's one hell of a teachers union.

I think it is fair punishment for the teacher to be fired. Religion should be a personal thing and not something to be forced or branded onto others.

Yeah, I'm especially not too fond of branding it on to others. Talk about pushy. :D

Will, I didn't see anything about a teacher's union contesting this - all I saw was that the guy's lawyer was acting to preserve his job and contest the firing.

It seems to me that criminal charges would be more appropriate.

Not actually, I don't really see it as causing grievous hurt or something to the extent, though the student can try suing in a civil court for emotional trauma :)

Agreed. And I can't believe these won't be coming shortly.

I don't think so, Wisdom. However short lived, these were burns, and I believe a case will justifiably be made for assault on underage children.

Legally maybe possible, but I feel that being fired already served its purpose. Sometimes it is better to live and let live. I hope it will not go to the courts.

I understand your point. As a parent, if some asshole did this to my kid, if my kid came home with a burn like this on his or her arm, I'd want him more than fired, personally. Absent my helping him to a new face, I believe a criminal charge is appropriate.

It's child abuse and far outside what a teacher is supposed to be doing with their students.

I can just imagine the criminal trial where the defense explains that the "high-frequency generator" is completely safe and the prosecutions asks the jurors which ones of them would like to have it tried on them.

Freaking people are afraid of cell phones. This is basically a microwave pointed at your flesh. Volunteers? :D

I mean, scientifically it probably only affects the upper layer of the dermis, but who wants their children to be the guinea pigs?

    Hahahah - yep.

The pic is enough for me. I'd have a hard time not rearranging the guy's molecular structure, in a "macro kind of way," know what I mean?

the burning is not the only wrong thing this guy did. gosh, he is deliberately teaching wrong stuff! is that more 'forgivable' than the branding? everybody would agree that a teacher that teaches wrong math is screwing up the students future and should be fired, why is this any different?

I think he should be fired for teaching bible theology in a science class. I think he should be prosecuted for criminally assaulting underage kids.

YES! I am far from atheist but is an afront to the spirit of academic study to teach something that is far outside the realm of objective reasoning. Religion is for parents and clergy not for teachers with a torture fetish.
Edit: If you want to teach theology it has to be taught correctly as an objective study of beliefs in an academic environment not as indoctrination.

I am all for the Creationism being taught in schools as long as Evolution is taught in churches.

This teacher had already been in trouble for not removing a bible from his desk and for telling students that he is required to teach what is in the text book, but that it is all untrue because it's not been proven according to the bible.

like NP said, I have no problem with him having personal beliefs, just like i have no problem with anyone trying to turn lead into gold in their garage on their own time, it;s dumb, But none of my business. the problem is he is teaching it to children while being paid with tax payers money in a class where they are supposed to be taught science, not religion.

here's some advice, if you don't believe in accepted science and the scientific method, DON'T BECOME A SCIENCE TEACHER!

What if the teacher had been imposing another religion than Christianity and branding students with some other cu;t symbol? He probably would have been lynched.

But as can be seen from some of the posts in this thread by those who are willing to excuse his actions, the U.S. has gone so far down the road to control by Christian fundamentalists that any act invoking this religion, no matter how extreme, gets a free pass or at worst, a slap on the wrist.
