I don't know if i should get an internet marketing tax specialist or just go to jackson hewitt. but I make a living online, and have a crap load of stuff to write off, is there an "ideal" accountant I want to look for in the chicago area, or are they all going to tell me they same exact stuff.

    Thanks

Some accountants are very good, and some are not. I am not sure about Illinois, but I know in many states there are no licensing or education requirements for tax preparers. With the big chains, you will know your preparer at least has some education, but most of those places cater to individuals, and their business tax knowledge will be minimal.

You need to find a tax accountant with experience with businesses. Not necessarily internet business. I would recommend finding an Enrolled Agent. In many cases they can be better than a CPA because they must get all of their continuing education in tax. (Plus I am an Enrolled Agent specializing in business taxes, so I may be a little biased!)

Ask them about their experience in preparing business tax returns, and what their stance is on taking all the deductions you are legally entitled to. If someone doesn't want to answer your questions, if they are "afraid" to take some deductions because it might be an "audit flag", or it's "too complicated" go somewhere else.

Start looking now, because in a month most good tax preparers will be booking up. I usually take no more new clients past February.

And just a little blurb for myself, I prepare tax returns in all 50 states, and do many of them long distance. PM me if you want to know more.

One more thing, don't pinch pennies when it comes to tax preparation. A good tax person can save you many times their fees each year.
