I am just trying to set up an email client (e.g., Outlook Express, Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.) for my client. He uses Tata Indicom / VSNL. Like many ISPs, Tata Indicom / VSNL does not let customers use their own outgoing mail servers. We need to use smtp.vsnl.net. But it seems that, in addition, ISP does not allow customers to use their own email addresses (like yourname@your domain.com) as their sender names.

Is anyone here using Tata Indicom / VSNL? If so, are you experiencing the same problem? If so, is there any way to resolve this?

I called the customer support a bunch of times, but I either ...

    Was hanged up ...
    Got no answer ...
Was asked to wait for 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, etc. ...

Basically, I have not been able to do anything about this; I have not been able to get around this problem.

I'd greatly appreciate any help on this.

Is he using broadband? or Dial UP?
If dial up, you can not configure any email client as they do not support POP or IMAP or SMTP.
Don't know about TI Broadband though.
