I want to get the thoughts of everyone on this. While I support the right to carry guns, you have to go through a lot of hassles to get a concealed weapon permit to carry a handgun while you're out an about.

In the state where I live, you need no permit to have a gun at home. I want to buy a rifle, but they are too big to carry around. I was thinking of getting a taser. My question is, what do you guys think the pros and cons to a taser are versus a handgun? Which do you think is better?

    easy decision:

    taser - 1 charge
    handgun -> 6-13 rounds

Now, seeing as statistically, most major crimes are committed by 2 or more people, what would you want?

In most use of force scenarios, a taser will allow you to better and more justifiably meter out your use of force in all but lethal scenarios. But I would ask - what situation would you find yourself in that you would need either?

I'd spend my time learning and developing awareness first, to avoid being in a compromising situation to begin with.

I'd carry both. I'd take out their kneecaps with the gun, then when they are writhing on the ground, I'd use the tazer on their nuts. Fun for the entire family

I want a dog to, but I can't really carry him everywhere.

Why not? What reasons do you have for your thoughts?

Its easy to shoot yourself with a handgun, and you also have to have a gun permit from the sheriff to conceal and carry them. I realize hand guns are more powerful, and what you say does make sense. Against two attackers you will be in a lot of trouble.

I'm not really in a bad situation. But as the saying goes, if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. :)

Well im currently in the us marines, and I'm pretty sure a taser would be ineffective in my line of duty

I am not arguing for lack of preparation, in fact quite the opposite.

What I am saying is that I'd put most of my preparation in the way of developing an acute sense of awareness, to avoid trouble in the first place. Most folks walk through life with a numbed state of the senses, and pop from completely unaware to amped on fear, then terror, when confronted with a real situation.

I would argue that what can be taught most quickly, assimilated and then banked on more often, is awareness such that one of these weapons, or any defensive tactic, is not needed in the first place.

Simple things - detecting odd motion or patterns, tactical awareness of blind corners, etc. All these things can be learned.

This is where I would put my effort.

That reminds me of Ross on Friends in the Unagi episode:

Ross: Well, of course you can defend yourself from an attack you know is coming. That's not enough. Look, I studied karate for a long time, and there's a concept you should really be familiar with. It's what the Japanese call Unagi.
Rachel: Isn't that a kind of sushi?

Ross: I tried attacking two women. It did not work.
    The Instructor: What?
Ross: No, I mean... it's okay, I mean, they're... they're my friends. In fact, I, I, I was married to one of them.
The Instructor: Let me get this straight, man. You attacked your ex-wife?
Ross: Oh, no! No, no! No, I tried. But I couldn't. That's why I'm here. Maybe we could attack them together?

Ross: Ah, Chandler I sensed it was you.
    Chandler: Huh?
    Ross: Unagi, I'm totally aware.
Chandler: OK, so are you aware that unagi is an eel?

(Ross leaps out at Phoebe and Rachel)
    Ross: Danger! Danger!
    (Phoebe and Rachel scream)
Rachel: What the hell was that?
Ross: A lesson in the importance of Unagi
    Phoebe: You're a freak!
Ross: Perhaps... Now at what point during those girlish screams would you have begun to kick my ass?
Rachel: Ok, so we weren't prepared!

Since weapons are mostly used on their owner, I'd pick a taser.

If you can only secure proper documents for it then I suggest you should get a handgun instead.

Taser is one hell of a powerful thing if you have a strong one, but there a minus is reach. I would recommend and extendo. It's not too heavy at all if you have a jacket, and its basiclly a metal stick that till do wonders against a blade/taser because of the reach.

I think the argument of carrying guns has been discussed before. Personally i like the fact the UK doesnt allow guns, as much as carrying a gun may protect you it probably also means the criminal robbing you or whatever can also be carrying a gun.
I like the concept of non lethal weapons such as tasers etc, but lets say the uk allowed tasers, i bet out of all robberies/muggings etc the ratio of criminals carrying a taser would be greater than people using to protect them
