Targeting keywords

    Ok so i need a little help understanding how to target keywords.

    So far when i write content I tend to go for keywords that have a small amount of traffic i.e. under 1000 searchs a month, according to the google adwords keyword tool. I manage to get my page to come in the top 5 serps for that keyword.

    Great i think but i now want to target keywords with more traffic 1000 searchs a month and up.

    Before i would use meta tags, back links, web 2.0 (digg etc) to help get rankings.

    Do i have to do anything different to go for higher traffic keywords?

    Thanks alot Dan. The link to the posts should be alot of help, link building isn't one of my strong points but i do try. I think i'll be following those articles in the other post very closely.

    One more question, although forgive me if it's a bit stupid but is it harder to go for higher traffic keywords or lower traffic keywords? Or does it not matter?

    higher traffic keywords are harder to gain Serps in because there is more competition doing the same things you are. BUT, they can pay off big in certain niches if you achieve top SERPS.
    It is always good to keep targeting the lesser keywords and phrases while continually promoting your major keywords on a steady basis.
    Eventually you will climb the ladder though it may take years to reach the top.

    I found that going after the Niche keywords is the way to go. I was actually getting more sales on a niche keyword that had 2,500 searches per month, than one with 250,000. I also used Word Tracker (a great tool) to find some of the lower competition niche keywords and actually got one of my websites in the top 3 of the listing.

    It doesn't matter since the only role traffic plays in SEO is which keywords the person doing the SEO work will target.

    A lot of good seo guys says this.. this must be true... As a new seo practitioner, my attention is always drawn to a broader and heavily trafficed keywords... I will get myself a little bit of discipline on this.

    Read up on KOI and KEI, which are simple math formulas that take into condsideration competitiveness and search volume of keywords. This formula could expose a high searched keyword with low competition within your niche

    To be successful in getting the right keyword you should know the niche and the type business of your client. Think as if you're the owner and the visitors of the site. In this was you can come up with bright ideas in picking the right keywords for your site.
