Hi all, If your main target keywords are: 'blue' and 'widget', and you have a non-keyword domain, e.g. www.colouredthings.co.uk (I am aware that a keyword only domain is only one SEO factor); to improve SERP's for a page, in a competitive niche for a new domain, is it better to: (1) Create an inner page with the target keywords in the name, e.g. www. colouredthings.co.uk/blue-widget.html, and build links to this page, using the keywords as anchor text? or (2) Target the home page, e.g. www. colouredthings.co.uk, and build links to that, using the keywords as anchor text? (3) Doesn't matter, as long as you have high quality content on a page, with the target keywords. Thanks in advance.
I would use my home page to target the most competitive terms, especially if your home page content is going to revolve around those terms. Use deeper pages to target less competitive terms and you can always link up to the home page from these pages to give it extra weight, especially if you can create a good structure for your site that has a consistent theme throughout its pages.
why not do a test - target it for your home page and create a new page specifically for that keyword with the friendly url - see which one you can get to rank quicker should be fun
Target the inner pages for specific keywords phrases....and build backlinks to those pages with the keywords as anchor text
If your website have a PR as well as back links then you can target the inner pages otherwise go for inner pages to improve traffic of the website overall.
SimpSEO has given you the most sound advice of all the posters above. Your home page should target your most general, hard to rank for keyword phrase(s). The deeper you click into your site, the more long tail, less competitive the keyword phrases should be. If "blue widgets" is the most general head term/keyword phrase you're targeting (and the most general keyword phrase you plan to ever target) then I would work on building links to your home page with "blue widgets" as the link text. But if you think you might eventually start selling red widgets, green widgets, purple widgets, etc. then I would target "widgets" with your home pages and have blue widget, red widget, green widget, and purple widget pages off of the home page to target "blue widgets", "red widgets", "green widgets", and "purple widgets", respective. A great site architecture (which would basically dictate your URL structure) is called theme pyramids. Google loves them.
Off-course Homepage but do high page rank bookmarking of your landing page which is co.uk/blue-widget.html.
