Targeting countries south of the equator

I have a product that (because is weather specific) sells very well in summertime but not in winter.

    I know that I can create ADs and target specific countries (new zealand, australia and south africa comes to mind naturally);

my question is; there may be a few million of people living in (let's say) Argentina, Brazil, etc. that speak English as their primary language.

If I create an AD and target those countries do I have to:

    1) create an AD in spanish? (the product is in english)
    2) Can I create the AD in english? Would Google only serve the AD to those visitors whose operating system (or browser preferences) is in english?

    Thanks/regards

    Here is my advice

1 start with creating your ad in English. Make sure you pick the countries that you want. Google will target the search string the user uses. Not so much the browser, although that may help. So if the person does a search for car dealer and your keyword is car dealer, your ad will show up...because it matches the search string.

2 Secondly, when you get your first campaign running right, I would then run a second campaign targetting the same country. Except this campaign would be in spanish. Make the ad and the keyword in spanish. This could easily double your business. I have a client doing this right now and is working fantastic

Your competition in other countries can be tiny compared to US markets.

Something else to consider about the spanish market. Make sure you use the right spanish. Different areas use different spanish. If you use the wrong spanish, you might get the clicks but not the conversions.

    Thanks
    Greg

If I am british, canadian or american and I live in Brazil (and there are millions of them) and I am interested in buying an eBook in English why would I not search for it in English?

I guess my answer to your question is yes.

When you create a campaign you get to choose locality and the langauge of the searchers. So start by writing English ads for an English audience.

Then, if that is profitable, try a new campaign that targets every language (but the ad is written in English). Many people search in their native language, but will still understand English enough to click on your ad.

Be wary of writing an ad in Spanish if the destination site is only in English. By having an English ad you are pre-qualifying their ability to navigate and purchase from your site.

Sorry I was not that clear in my earlier message...

Actually I am targeting english speakers living in foreign countries.

    I guess my question is:

If I create an AD (in English) and I target a country whose primary language is NOT English, is the Ad shown to EVERYONE that perform the search or is the Ad shown only to users with an English browser installed?
    :p

Alternatively: if the above is not correct; what is the best way to target English speakers living in foreign countries?

You get to choose the language when you create a campaign - you can choose for your ads to only appear to those who search in English, or any other language, or all languages. Start a new campaign, or edit an existing one, and you should see this option.

    Google says:

    How does language targeting work?

When determining where to show your ads, the AdWords system looks at a user's Google interface language setting to see if it matches one of the languages that your campaign targets. For example, only users whose Google interface language is Spanish will see ads in a campaign targeted to Spanish.

Each Google domain's language setting defaults to the language most commonly associated with that Google domain. For example, Google.com defaults to English, Google.fr defaults to French, etc. Users can change their Google interface language via the 'Preferences' link next to the Search Bar on the Google homepage. A Spanish-speaker living in the United States, for instance, may want to perform searches on Google.com but change the interface language setting to Spanish.

You may consider targeting multiple languages to expand your advertising reach on Google. For example, an advertiser may have a website written in English and an AdWords campaign with English ads and keywords. However, he may choose to target that campaign to both English and Spanish. This way, his ads will show to bilingual users who search on his English keywords - indicating that they speak English and would be interested in his website - but whose Google interface language is set to Spanish.

Targeting multiple languages can also increase your ads' exposure across the Google Network. A website in the Google Network can target a certain language, meaning that only ads targeting the same language can appear on that site. For example, a content site in the Google Network may target the Spanish language, which means that your ad would only show on that site if your campaign's language targeting selection included Spanish.
