Target A Certain Country

I'd like to make my site targeted for UK people. Are all standard marketing methods good in this case? For example, will directories, social networks like Digg and so on be ok in my case?
Share your opinion on what additional specific methods you would use to optimize (rank) your website for a certain country.

i've found it helps if your website is hosted on UK servers with UK nameservers.
build back links from sites from the same country and same language also helps.

Lets discuss this point more thoroughly :) Can anyone name the most popular English social networks and other portals? I guess englishmen also vastly use such networks as Digg, Stumbleupon, Twitter which are rather international (?) Or should I forget those useless places ))

Another important thing is language - keep in mind that there are differences between American and British English. If you want to create a site for UK citizens, then use British English.

I would recommend getting links in blogs/forums that deal with the topic of your site. I think a simple Google research would be sufficient to find some nice sites.

IMO, FB/myspace have a ton of local searches if you looking for SM that's geo-target based.

Be sure to add geo targeting to your meta section. I don't know if it has a huge impact but every little thing helps.

    1. UK domains will work good for you
    2. Use UK slang
    3. Use British streets, regions, cities, names of the famous places and etc
    4. If you have keywords list, think about generating pages with addition keyword+local_place phrases
    5. Use British contact information on the site

Can't imagine why the majority of methods used in the US would not also work in the UK. As has been mentioned already, be sure to use English spellings. It's a giveaway when you spell program instead of programme. :)

Getting links from UK sites definitely will help. Anything you can do to appeal to the British market is good. You can add flavor to your site by including British references - to events, locations, business, etc.

    Yes. Of course.

Imagine the World Wide Web is as one huge store that anybody from around the world can walk into.

If you do not care that much about seo, and you shouldn't anyway as it is greatly overated, don't mess with getting a new extension.

    Again, yes. Of course.

The same sites you and I go to, they go to. Even this site.

Other than perhaps doing some keyword searches, like, say, UK websites or UK traffic, you realy don't need to do anything special.

You do not have to worry about grammar between the two countries. If they like your site, all is good. They already know there are differences between websites from other countries.

Askmen (an American website), for example, has a lot of visitors from other countries.

Don't make this hard and complicated. It isn't.

one thing not mentioned here that I think is very important is.. you need to have a proxy browsing set tup.. keep in mind what you see in your search engine result is different if you use the same engine but search from another country.. search results are optimized for different location..

once you have the geo surfing set up.. you know which sites are important in that country.. then you can use the same seo trick and apply that your effort...

I suggest you target geo-specific keywords, meaning keywords that have the term "UK" in it. Exchange links with relevant, UK sites to boost site traffic. There are many social networks, forums and FB groups specifically created for Brits, participate in those sites.
