Can you get melonoma skin cancer from tanning beds just as you can by sitting out in the regular old sun? Or, are these somehow safer for you than the suns natural rays?
I'm not sure, but aren't UV rays still being fired at ya. I think they are. So they aren't as safe. But I'm guessing here. Skinny
Most of the results in Google news indicated that tanning beds are NOT safe alternatives. Here is one of many results: http://www.halifaxlive.com/content/view/747/51/
Ask the woman in the UK who was just awarded a gazillion bucks pay out for the massive burns she received when the bed wouldn't open and she was almost roasted to death.
I had an ex who went in one naked and burnt his willy. Funny then and now, but you have to have to be careful. The advice down here is that sunbeds are just as harmful. My rationale is that if they prepare your skin for exposure you're going to get anyway then a carefully built up tan (protection from burning) has to be better than burning.
True Story here: When I was in my early teens I went to church with a lady maybe 10 years my senior. She went to tanning beds all the time, and was instructed to do so by her physician. The physician told her it would help with her dermatitis. She went and then she did not get cancer but the tanning beds started frying her from the inside out. By the time she was 30 yrs old she looked as if she was in her late 60's and they told her she would never have children due to the condition the tanning beds left her in. The Dr flubbed up, she sued and made a killing but, the fact of the matter is that tanning beds due can cause skin cancer if you do not use in moderation )) serious illnesses. I will have to see if she will give me permission to slap a picture of her before and after the tanning bed. You will find it interesting what they can do to someone. She is a lot better now that she quit going to the tanning beds she has gotten some of the age that she lost back, and has had 2 kids since. Mill
Tanning beds are definitely no better than exposing yourself to the sun. As a matter of fact, they can be considered even worse for you than the sun because of the types of rays emitted and the fact that they are much more concentrated. What can I say? I'll stay white, thanks.
