Taliban Recruits 6-Year-Old Boy as Suicide Bomber

FORWARD OPERATING BASE THUNDER, Afghanistan (AP) - June 25, 2007 - The story of a 6-year-old Afghan boy who says he thwarted an effort by Taliban militants to trick him into being a suicide bomber provoked tears and anger at a meeting of tribal leaders.

The account from Juma Gul, a dirt-caked child who collects scrap metal for money, left American soldiers dumbfounded that a youngster could be sent on such a mission. Afghan troops crowded around the boy to call him a hero.

Though the Taliban dismissed the story as propaganda, at a time when U.S. and NATO forces are under increasing criticism over civilian casualties, both Afghan tribal elders and U.S. military officers said they were convinced by his dramatic account.

Juma said that sometime last month Taliban fighters forced him to wear a vest they said would spray out flowers when he touched a button. He said they told him that when he saw American soldiers, "throw your body at them."

The militants cornered Juma in a Taliban-controlled district in southern Afghanistan's Ghazni province. Their target was an impoverished youngster being raised by an older sister - but also one who proved too street-smart for their plan.

"When they first put the vest on my body I didn't know what to think, but then I felt the bomb," Juma told The Associated Press as he ate lamb and rice after being introduced to the elders at this joint U.S.-Afghan base in Ghazni. "After I figured out it was a bomb, I went to the Afghan soldiers for help."

hmmmm, am a bit skeptical here, i mean even fundamentalists as bonkers as the taliban would surely see the difficulties with using a child. i mean what if the child just pressed the button whilst in taliban company to see the pretty flowers, sounds a bit suss.

The religion of peace begins the spread of love and tolerance at a very young age.

But the boy is only 6, what will he do with all those virgins? I wonder if he would trade some for a new bike or xbox 360? If anyone knows the boy and he is interested in my offer, please send me a PM! :D

Well dude, Six year old kids aren't generally as intelligent and Taliban most certainly wont leave a child loose with a bomb around it, if at most they want to even get a kid with a bomb jacket blasted at the Americans, one of them would most likely escort it to a camp and then tell it to go to the camp and then press the button.

    My 2 cents.

Why can't we all just get along? Believe what you want to believe but don't harm others.

Religion has done far more harm to civilization than good. We aren't 2000 years ago when the scriptures were written when will people figure out that if your bible / koran says that anyone who doesn't believe is going to helll... that means half the world is and that is impossible as many are good people. Live a good life and you will be rewarded whether you believe or not. I can't believe this message isn't being spread more...

That's a really terrible story, if it's true then it's absolutely disgusting how anyone can do something like that.

You get intelligent when you live in an area surrounded by blood thirsty Talibans.
No-one wants to loose the life for something they do not believe.
Well no. According to the news source, they put the bomb laden vest and asked him to just throw himself on American troop when he sees them.

I don't support any kind of abuse on children but I think it's pretty natural they are blood thirsty against the americans considering the fact that you are ocupying their ccountry. They were blood thirsty against the russians in the 80's too when they invaded afghanistan. And it was the US who helped the talibans during that period. It's funny how they were considered "the good guys" in that period, but once the US doesn't have the same interests as them they become the bad guys

Well you cant simply blame US for everything..

US wouldn't have invaded Iraq if Iraq hadn't invaded Kuwait.
US wouldn't have invaded Afghanistan if AQ hadn't killed thousands of people in WTC, NYC and Pentagon.

Oh come on... you can't use logic and expect not to be harassed. I won't be defending you on this one, logic is senseless when it comes to reality.

It's amazing what people will make up for justifying a group making a suicide bomber out of a six year old.

Lorien has covered this oft mention myth several times:

Everyone live in their own belief.Perhaps Taliban are under the belief violence is the only answer to peace. They don't mind if a six year can help them spread it.
