    you can even use vcd cutter for this purpose.

    VLC is the best otherwise also cuz its an opensource software and u can download the other plugins if u need and u wont need to search for an all codec bundle. Also u could try Stormcodec, its comes with a good codec bundle and also a default Classic media player, very simple and no frills interface and u can take screenshots of videos very easily.
