    I want to move from paypal to a merchant account. I realize that I will need a gateway, processor, etc and that there are many different companies that offer these services. Can someone ballpark how much per month in fixed costs taking CC's will be though?

    Yep... another option is to just use PayPal. You can accept credit cards through PayPal and it's not a *terrible* rate (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction is the worst rate). If you are an established business doing a decent volume of transactions, you should be able to get a better rate from your bank though.

    How much is it per month for a merchant account, a gateway, a payment processor, a security certificate? Is that all I need?

    I'm not sure how it's done in the States, but here in Australia we can't really use paypal (no AUD support yet) - and banks are a pain. They have a risk chart of sorts.. the more risky (as in products that attract fraudulent activity) the higher the rate.

    I'm not sure what options your banks have over there (or where you are), but it's always a great idea to have a good look around. I've had clients who actually opened other merchant accts because the rates were better with other banks.

    Yeah, if you can you may want to stick with paypal. They give you pretty good protection as a seller which you will find is very important if you choose to migrate towards getting your own merchant.
