    Ok, use Firefox browser.

Then query for SEO firm, the word "search engine optimization" too gets highligted in bold (look at the SERPS!!)

Now query using same Firefox browser for SEO Company
...nothing other than SEO or Company gets highlighted there in the SERPS.

Am I pressing the panic button?

Something in store for all of us in 2006, I guess.

Second Edit addition: When querying for SEO, the phrases like Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Optimising too gets highlighted!!!

I'm not drunk yet!!! (still one more day to go for new year's eve folks)

Third Update: Even in IE do the same only for SEO. My oh MY!!!

    Regards,
    Dilip Samuel

    I have no idea.

And I'm not really sure how they determine which ones to bold. Seems pretty random to me (although I haven't done much research ;)).

In 2003-mid Google enabled the ~ (tilde) searching. Say for example,

    query like this: ~keyword

Now if you do that for ~SEO, you'll see alternative and relative terms too highlighted.

But this time Google is blatant, I guess.

seems like a pretty comprehensive database. a search for "ifi" returns highlighted bold in #2 the "irish film institute", a small independent cinema here in dublin.

and it's not just english. i'm seeing popular french abbreviations expanded too on google.fr.
