So I have my website http://stocksonwallstreet.net/ and recently I won stocksonwallstreet.com. I was wondering how do I go about switching it to make the .com the primary domain name shown?

With godaddy its simple option in the hosting control functions, which allows you to change the primary(even have more than one domain pointing to it) domain its associated with. But every hosting company many vary.

The real quest is, if your domain is registered at the same location as your hosting? if so, read the FAQ's or contact a representive via email.

Ask your hosting provider for help and change your domain name. They will do it on their server and modify the
ns record for you. When it propagates on the whole Internet, your can use your new domain.Do not forget to
redirect your old domain to the new one for some time.

Considering that stocksonwallstreet.net has PR and backlinks, I'd keep that as my main site I promote and simply forward stocksonwallstreet.com to the .net. The only reason I would really change the domain is if the new one was different, had better PR, or more backlinks. Since your new one doesn't, I assume you just wanted it to get the visitors who are use to typing in .com at the end of every URL.

If that's the case, simply log into Godaddy and forward the domain.

I already have a domain name hosted by Hostgator, but I'm finding it very difficult to change the content. I've asked them directly how to but they're very slow with a response. Anyone have any ideas?

    1) if you are using cPanel, you have whm access, do the followings:
Login to WHM >> Account Functions >> Modify an Account >> choose your domain name and click on modify

    2) If you have Plesk, use option "Rename Domain".

I've just discovered the art of 'forwarding' to another site i.e. already hosted/affiliate. I think it's all to do with the control panel but it's a minefield!

i agree with boxer126, in this case as the .net has pr and backlinks, and the .com has next to no backlinks and no page rank, i would just stick with .net as your primarry domain myself and forward the .com to to the .net.

if the .com was older, or had better pr and backinks then in which case you would switch but in this case the .net is better so i would advise you to keep it as your primary domain.

the .com was a good aquisition however as some people just add .com to everything and hope for the best :)

I would but from what everyone says it makes sense just to redirect not switch due to the high amount of PR and backlinks to the .net.

    it's true.
you will lose the PR and backlinks from the .net domain.
this will be a big lost unless you do not mind to lose it.
it is better to redirect than change the domain name. :)

The only problem with forwarding is the search engine spiders don't usually pick up on the destination site, also if you're advertising some of those companies don't allow sites that forward to another. I'd always make sure you're inputing the destination site if you're advertising it, just in case

Hi, Steve, you have done a good job.
yes, when you come with this problem, the sticking point is to consult your provider, you know, domain names providers will all offer this service for you.:p
