Hi there I need some advice on where to go to purchase my new server, my site is rapidly out growing 256RAM / 10 Gig hdd / 500 gig bandwidth, I currently just use a Godaddy server which I have found has done the job, but without flying colours. Now I am looking for a dedicated server and am not impressed with Godaddy's options. I require a linux server with 2gig ram / 2,000 gig bandwidth and 100-200 gig hdd, no I have found one like this with godaddy however that is there top spec, I wanted something that if I wanted to I could pay a bit more and upgrade directly to 4gig of ram, If I felt it necessary or increase bandwidth or hdd seamlessly, (obv) with maximum up time. Anybody have any tips on what hosting company to use? any help would be much appreciated!!
With this kind of spec server, you would need to ask yourself how much is your monthly budget will be. You can try SoftLayer as I am a customer with them for over 18 months now and I am really happy to be there. If your budget is not too much then you could go for the: Intel Pentium D Series 2GB RAM 250GB HDD 2000GB Bandwidth Also in there specials page you can also use the promo code to give you an extra 2GB of RAM plus a free 250GB HDD. But on the other hand the servers at SL are all self-managed, you can either find a server management company to manage your server. Some of the companies charge around $30-200 a month. If the management service is too pricey then you can try PSM which they only charge $29 a month.
hey adam1k, u can try managemybox service, they are great too. I got one box with them. bluazn, I actually want to have another box with softlayer but i got problem with management company, do you think u can recomment someone , must be good company and willing to help me with the setup of software.
I will suggest you to have your server managed with the same company from where your are buying your server hosting. This would be easy to manage and communication. There are many reliable host who provide fully managed hosting at cheaper rates with excellent service.
I haven't tried other management companies before, as I only use PSM or my friend to manage my boxes. You can try this one, one of the SL staff recommended this to me as they are familiar with the SL Network.
What is your budget? Where do you want the server to be located UK or US? If that specifies I can assist you in a much better way
I suggest a managed box from the same server reseller. As suggested, SoftLayer is a very good choice, and many fully managed company are reselling. I can recommend http://www.beachcomber.net . I was and am very satisfied.
Hey Camay, How can we ensure that a particular hosting comapny is not a reseller and have their own server ? Is there any hard&fast rule to identify such reseller host who present themselves as to be owner of an hosting company.
thanks for the advice my budget at the moment isn't more than $100-$150 per month but as my traffic increase I don't want to have to change servers again and again, want to just add ram to my current system etc. I don't really care if it is in the UK or in USA just want good value for money with the pound strong against the dollar best option is prob USA.
Reselling servers is not bad because not every dedicated server provider will build his own data center or colo them You also always find some goodies attached to the server being resold like free management TO get to know if it's reseller you might find the answer by doing traceroute / IP whois at www.domaintools.com
Thanks Tech Entrance for info But IMO if you are with a host who is reselling dedicated servr from other then you will have to depend on third party for your support ( you will contact your host and he will contact his host ) and will increase time for getting solution. Better to get a host who have their own servers colo or have their own data center. @adamk1 : You can get a Dual Core Pentium D - 3.0Ghz with 1 GB RAM within your budget from webhosting.uk.com Just have a look at their Managed Dedicated Hosting plans.
No no this is not the case at all When someone is reselling server he can offer you complete support without getting back to the original company as he can manage your server through command line just as you do (plus the fact that he has the knowledge to manage every thing that runs on your server) Even the reboot when the server is completely down can be down via remote reboot port The only case that he will need direct contact with the original company is when you are asking for hardware replacement or upgrade - and in this case the original company contacts the data center to do this through the reserves of hardware they have in the data center You are being harsh asking every dedicated server supplier to own his own data center btw but having their own rack or if they colo will be cool since they will have the right to get direct contact with the data center.
