I have a backup from my original server, I need to transfer that to my new server, and also I need to bring my domain over to the new server. How do I go about doing these?
They both have the same things. MySQL and linux, those were the 2 most important things to me. I did a backup from my old server, well I am still with them, haven't signed up for the new one yet until I know exactly what to do. The backup file is 2gigs. Am I suppose to just directly upload my backup file on the new server? The file is .tar, but I unpacked it so I have all of the files seperatly. I am not sure which way of going about to upload everything. And then there is the domain name transfer. I bought my domain with my server package, and I left the namesevers they provided as default. I guess I should of said host? I am moving from surpasshosting and using a different company.
If you have ssh access to the new server, you could scp the backup tar file to new server and then extract the file to the public_html folder and run mysql to import the database. Or if you have control panel like cpanel, then you could use the restore section under your cpanel. The best option is to ask your new provider to get your site to new location. provide them with the backup file you have right now. In the case of cpanel backup, root users have a convenient option for full restoration of both files and mysql database in a stretch
Yes it does have cpanel I asked the host where I am going to how much it would cost to transfer, they said it starts off at $50 just for the files, and to transfer the domain is $25. So that is a little much for me... So just upload the .tar file in the restore section under cpanel... and that is it?
thats awkward, 75$ for migrating the domain. and you hose a provide who charge these much, for a simple work. You need to backup/restore the home directory + mysql database + email forwarders + email filters. Please be sure to play safe. keep your current hosting live, migrate the domain and after everything sorted out then only cancel old account. I would suggest looking for a better host
It is the best priced host that I can find. I had to get a server that was hosted off shore because my site contains warez links. And these are pretty expensive for the amount of space I need. And I have the mysql and home directory in the backup already. I never setup e-mail fowarders or filters.
