Hello All, I have recently opended a VPS account and am in the process of moving all of my sites from my old shared hosting accounts over. I have noticed something wierd that maybe someone can answer for me. It has been one month since I moved a particular domain over to the new VPS account and switched the nameservers. However, I can still access the statistics on the old shared account and notice that it is still registering hits on the old server. How can this be? I am getting hits to both servers. I realize there is some time to propogate (a few days maybe), but after a month I still get a steady stream of traffic to the old server. Anyone have any idea what could be going on? I don't want to shut off the old account and lose any traffic. Thank you.
DNS changes takes from 12 to 72 hours to fully propagate throughout the Internet, unless there is a technical problem at you registrar preventing the changes. You wil probably have entries for both, the VPS and the hold hosting nameservers and that is why the site is between both of them To check DNS, ping, trace, etc. use these online tools www.dnsstuff.com
in october 2006 i moved my site to root server as well. after one week I still got considerable traffic on old server hence i added a redirect in my htaccess from old server to new IP - I also paid the old account another few weeks ( total one month into the new server operation ) while TTL of DNS usually is 24 hrs even european NS still used the old IP after a full week week hence it may last until expiry date of DNS config the fastest NS however switched within less than one hour and half a day later most traffic arrived on new server. with a redirect on your old location - all traffic will instantly move to your new location and give all world time to adjust at their own pace thier NS
Thanks everyone for the input. It has been over one month since the switch, so I figured there were some technical problems. I checked the domain on dnsstuff.com and sure enough there were issues. i contacted my VPS host and they said they corrected the zone file and it should be fixed within 24 hours. Thanks!
