I've been working for this company for 3 years, and they had a web presence - along with a multitude of webmasters - for several years prior to that. We have now decided to switch hosting companies, and I want to ensure that I create the folder structure in the best way possible. Obviously, it would be easiest to create the structure the way it is now, but I'm not sure it's the smartest decision to make. We have multiple domain names, 3 of which I'm concerned about the most. I'd like them to be able to share certain folders - images, articles, and the mailing program - in order to conserve space. Which is more advisable - setting each domain up in it's own folder: Domain1.com Domain2.com Domain3.com Or to setup the largest domain as the main folder, with the others as sub folders: Domain1.com Domain2 Domain3 SharedFiles Or is there a better way I'm not thinking of? I'd appreciate any and all advice! TIA
You could set it up the same way but make one image and share it for each site. Same goes for rest of each site you want to share. You would just have to change 2 sites to get the one image and other files to work. It would save space like you want. I would use the smallest site to host images and files for the 2 other sites.
With the img src code being http://www.domain2.com/image.jpg? I'm concerned about images displaying properly coming from other sites - Firefox, and possible other browsers, have a setting that can prevent that. Or do you mean to use a relative reference?
I would do them each as separate folders. If you want to share a folder of images you could make a symbolic link. If files need to be shared, you can keep them in an includes or shared directory outside of any of the domains (e.g., "~/shared/") and have scripts refer to them with the full path.
host gator lets you do option two, I love it there, and am going to be writing a special report about using it, because at first it is difficult for new people if you choose host gator let me know I will give you a free copy.
