I have 40 unique content pages on my site hosted on a free host. However, I am adding that content to my new site at a paid host. How do i avoid search engines thinking i stole the content?

    Delete the free one.

Google will read the duplication sooner or later and you will be punished on bothe websites so work out which domain you wish to use and stick with it.

    Good luck

Yeah, as long as the data is on one domain and not only one!

I'm not 100% sure, but can't you 301 redirect to your relevant new site's pages so that you don't lose much search engine ranking and it solves the problem of duplication? As I said, I'm not fully sure, but I have heard that that is the way to go.

Yeah that would work, so long as the content is only on one domain, you can direct traffic from to the other without risking being sandblasted.
