Switching from Blogger to WP ...... where should i host my blog ?

Discussion in 'WordPress' started by electron, Apr 8, 2009.

I have been using blogger for sometime now. I want to experiment with WP but I do not have much experience with hosting.

I checked namecheap, they are offering hosting for 1 yr. But, I want to give it a try for 2-3 months first.

Do all hosts allow to host WP blog, or some special kind of hosting is required ?

What host would you suggest ? (for Payment via Paypal)

Wordpress have their own list of recommended hosts @ http://wordpress.org/hosting/

Most hosts should be able to meet the requirements of hosting Wordpress- http://wordpress.org/about/requirements/

You could obviously pay monthly, but bear in mind that it will be more costly than the yearly plan.

Asmallorange, Bluehost, Dreamhost, Lunarpages, Hostgator, Hostmonster, Hostican- they'll all do a good job.

I use hostgator but i also use a seperate UK host, wordpress is a pretty standard type of script to run at web hosting accounts so most shared hosting is suitable.

Wordpress is actually very easy to install without fantastico. You create a MySQL database, which is very easy. Then you upload the files. Configure the config.php and your off.

Take the time to read the 5 minute install guide at the wordpress site. Learning how to do something will help you down the road. When you auto install something with Fantastico you may not get a current version. A lot of hosts do not keep their auto install scripts up to date. Allways go to wordpress and get the most recent release for new installs.

I know this is a suggestion on who TO use and but I felt that I'd suggest not using GoDaddy or Dreamhost from personal experience.
GoDaddy limits connections on basic accounts which will cause loading errors if your blog gets a lot of traffic and many Dreamhost hosted sites that I know of have been showing a LOT of slowdown as of the past 3 months.

Ok, Civin, WOW. This is good info. We have a couple of web clients at the job that we just put the one page installation of WordPress from the GoDaddy account. If this is posing a problem, I would love to know about it now vs. later. We just started doing this for ease of use by the client but if it going to cause headaches in the future, then I would much rather pay the price of time once. Man, thanks for the heads up.

No problem! It's surprisingly hard to find good details on since there are multiple errors that come up when the database reaches its maximum allowed connections and I've only found a couple of sites that have actually posted what is causing the issue.

I'm actually in the process of finding a new host as well. Blue Host and Host Gator have been the 2 that have looked the best. Is there a downside to either offhand to be aware of?

Well, you could try out wpwebhost.com, they are specially designed for wordpress hosting. And they also offer 30 day trial without requiring any credit card or paypal details. Only thing that you might have to pay is for domain name unless you have one.

In your OP you said that you don't want to pay up front for 1 year and would like to try the host out. Bluehost is great but doesn't do short term billing where Host Gator does (monthly and quarterly).
