I switched to a new host, and now I can't run more than 4 plug ins, or I get an error message about too much allotted memory:

What have some pf you done to alleviate this problem?

I think you are getting that because your hosting account has maxed out it's space. Can you upgrade to a larger account?

Host is "working" on it. Waiting to hear back from them. It is a memory issue.
