ok, I just switched host and now waiting for DNS to propagate. I am planning to register another domain name and have my previous webhost host it. now I am stuck because I cannot access cPanel and I don't know what to do. can anyone tell me how to associate my new domain name with my previous webhost since their cPanel is linked to my old domain name and not the new one. I can't contact them either since it is still propagating and I don't want any downtime.
If you know or can get the IP for the old account simply type the IP#/cpanel/ into the address bar of your browser. You will need your username and password. You may still be able to get the IP by pinging the domain if the dns has not propagated yet. start>run>cmd> then "ping domainname.com" without the quotes.
yes, I still got the IP. I was looking in the members section and found that my old domain name is listed my account. i guess i have no choice but to contact the webhost to change the domain name since that setting cannot be edited by me. that means some delay which i cannot afford. i only have 4 days left to set it up. is there anyway I can do this through cPanel?
No. On a shared hosting account there is no way you can point the new domain to the old account. You also do not want to make the change until the DNS for the old domain has had time to make it through the system. That is usually no more than 48 hours from the time you changed it.
ok thx. i send a ticket to ask them if it was possible around 10 hrs ago, and still no reply. i guess thats why i left them...
Try to get a new hosting with a cumulated Control Panel, that doesn't need to be linked with a domain name. One such host is Dreamhost. They also have very good support and response time, but they have some problems with trafic and stuff, as websites go down 30-45 minutes per week on a regular basis. You can also forget a front page Digg without cacheing activated.
no, they have their own control panel. I was referring to the fact that most ppl prefer cPanel (I think) than those crap-looking control panels but cPanel connects to a domain name, which isn't really that good. in my case where I need to change domain name on my cPanel, my web host have to handle a load of probs configuring mySQL and other stuff.
