I'd recommend Debian or Gentoo, but Gentoo just for very advanced-users

I was using Ubuntu for couple of months and it was very nice. That was my first touch outside MS.

Go with Ubuntu. It's seems more popular than SUSE and there are large forums dedicated to Ubuntu.

Ok, so now I come to the next question- where can I find Packages for Ubuntu online? I use an AMD 64 bit system- last night I downloaded a .iso cd image containing all the packages, but it was for an intel 386 system
I would be grateful if someone could help me out with this
    Regards,
    Jeewant

Dude you downloaded the wrong version, download 64bit version!!

About your other query, there is software respiratory in Ubuntu which carries lists for software available for downloads. So you don't have to looks for pacakges elsewhere, just go ahead, select and download them. :D

I'm a Ubuntu fan in honesty, it's really easy to use, and it's a very powerful OS, i also like the idea of Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu versions. Really it's a person preference with these flavours of linux, since they all offer different user aspects, either way, i recommend BERYL visualisations ^-^ http://www.beryl-project.org/ Wonderful visuals for your flavour ^-^

ubuntu, although i've never used suse. but its very user friendly and its very fast especially after the updates that come with it. and it is also best used for hard drives that have a small amount of GBs such as 10 or 20. so try it out I personally think its better than windows
