Surprise: Google indexed my new site, but I didn't do anything yet

Well, this kind of caught me off guard. I'm building a brand-new website (new domain too) and uploaded a couple pages to test out the php scripts a few days ago. So just now I was checking out my other sites using the site: commander and decided to give the new guy a try, and was really surprised to see it was indexed by Google already! I certainly didn't submit to Google or any other search engines. I also made sure I didn't link to it from anywhere because 95% of the pages are not even uploaded yet.

So how did this happen? I did put Analytics to the index page just yesterday, but really don't think this did the trick.

Anyway, I don't think it is a bad thing, but am just curious and also wondering whether there will be any negative effects. Will the "early" indexing hurt my future ranking because of the many broken links on the home page? I guess taking it down is not a good option now, so do I have to accelerate building the site to avoid potential damages, if any? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it. Just build the site, update it regularly and promote it when you're ready. Google will see the changes and update its index accordingly.

If it is a blog, new pages get sent to ping services automatically.

If you registered a domain name, Google might have used that information to start crawling your site.

It's difficult to guess without knowing the site.

Thanks for the quick replies. I do have one outbound link on the index page, so maybe it was the reason. Domain registration and Analytics could cause it too I guess. It is not a blog. Didn't use robots as I didn't expect Google can be this good :)

Anyway, now there is more pressure to build the sites quickly.
