When you give something away people will take advantage no matter the quality. Alexa means nothing for free directories. The quality and value of a directory is better based upon its database/listings. Your directory is not worth nearly as much as you think. In fact, it's not worth anything. Any idiot can throw up a free directory on the Internet and get some submissions and decent traffic. What makes a directory worth something is the quality/organization of your listings...which your directory is lacking. Tons of spammy keyword stuffed titles/descriptions and listings that seem to be misplaced. I'm guessing there is either some auto-approving going on, or the "check all - approve listing" technique. I really liked the fact that you list "sex toys" and "dildo" stores in http://tiptopdirectory.com/Shopping/Toys_and_Games/ right next to listings for kids like Fisher Price toys and educational toys. And I liked this little gem in http://tiptopdirectory.com/Society/Women/ : Title: Pussy Desc: Rate sexy pussy pics or submit your own pics. Post comments and send messages to other members. How is that site appropriate for that caegory? You need to do some serious cleanup. If you are going to accept such sites, at least put them in there own appropriate category. Also, you site's search form is not working properly.
As I said, I kinda forgot I even had the thing. My plan involves wiping everything except for the premium listings, and then make it pay only even if it's just like a dollar to keep the spam away. Suggestions on going about that?
Yes i remember that directory (its been online for a while 2+ years i believe)... Its got a good alexa which isnt hard to fathom as noted above its free and offers 3 deep links (in which case they come running). A directories value like many other sites depends on sales, traffic, options its offers and other varibles including someone willing to pay the price... I don't take those estimates to heart. But I have figured out a way to profit even if I open it up and make it free...I just have to get it implemented...and start promoting this thing again sometime.
Keep in mind the alexa toolbar is spyware and its "rankings" are not accurate. If you want accurate rankings, sign up at a site like quantcast. They use a tracking tag that you put on your site to directly measure the traffic.
