High court blocks military tribunals WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the Bush administration did not have the legal authority to go forward with military tribunals for detainees at the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba. The 5-3 ruling means officials will either have to come up with new procedures to prosecute at least 10 so-called enemy combatants awaiting trial, or release them from U.S. military custody. The case was a major test of President Bush's authority as commander in chief in a wartime setting. Bush has aggressively asserted the power of the government to capture, detain, and prosecute suspected terrorists in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The title of your thread is really misleading. "High court blocks Gitmo military tribunals" would be more appropriate. Stop trying to make it seem like everybody hates Bush.
Not everyone, just 70% of the US, and the rest of the entire world. There's still that 30% of the right-wing US nutcases that worship him.
And based on the title I thought they upheld some anti-porn legislation... you really should be more clear in your titles. -Michael
They are brainwashed by liberal media, that's why they decided to block. Hmm.. doesn't seem that the Bush administration succeeded into to turning the country into a Kingdom and bringing on the NWO According to Yo-Yo and Anthonocea, it seems that this was their major goal
Too bad they did not go by the law of the land in 2000 when that dead man appointed by Nixon gave Cheney the White House!
Hard to believe people are happy about this ruling. Quick question. Who brought the lawsuit? Answer: Salim Ahmed Hamdan Who is Salim Ahmed Hamdan? Answer: He was the driver and bodyguard for one Osama bin Laden. Not exactly some dude who happened to be standing around when the US rampaged thru the country. Are you happy that this guy cannot be tried for supporting bin Laden? Furthermore, all this decision does is prolong peoples' stay in Camp Gitmo. It does NOT say that the camp must be closed, or the people released. So the stays are extended. If you are for these people to be released or put thru the legal system, this is not a positive step. More time to commit suicide is all this 'victory' grants them. Think the US is gonna release them now that this decision has been reached? Not likely. All this does is make Bush return to congress to get the legal authority to try these people. At the achingly slow pace that congress can move. Think this is gonna happen quickly? Not likely. Just more wrangling - and indeed - these people get to sit around Camp Gitmo longer. Think the Democrats in congress are happy? Think they want to be on the wrong side (voting NO) for Bush's legal authority? Probably not. So justice delayed, is about all this does. It simply forces a vote in the Senate (which will inevitably give Bush the authority he requires to try these people). Nothing more, nothing less. But, if you want to cheer these people sitting around Gitmo longer and pray that Salim and his ilk go free; please do feel free.
