Supplemental Content for Directories (phpld, etc)

I'm planning out my next general directory and would like others opinions on the best supplemental content to give a directory domain and where to put it.

Blogs are popular. Do they work better at domain.com/blog or blog.domain.com? What is the topic? Discussion of the directory or something else?

I also see a lot of forums, most often as a method of tech/customer support. But then you get the added pressures of marketing, moderating and staying active in the forum. Is it worth it?

What other ways are there to enhance content on a directory? I'm sure there are some great methods to help reduce the "just another directory" effect.

Voice up, share your thoughts! (please?) :)

Well, I don't mind telling you what I'm working on. I currently have a blog, it's http://z-blackfox.info/blog simply a directory of my actual...errr directory. lol

Also, I am starting to build a collection of articles, to display on the directory and hopefully incorporate them into the individual categories, to help build value amongst the many categories, so that no one gets left behind with crawling/pr/traffic.

It's a long hard road, but it is most important not to leave your directory vacant, otherwise it just becomes 'another' directory, instead of YOUR directory. :) At least that's what I hope to portray.
