Not really answering your question...but you should be aware that pages can be supplemental or not, according to the search term.

I have a site with about 1500 pages and site:sitename.com ***-view shows about 400 supplemental results. But when I search for text from the pages, the same pages show as normal, non-supplemental results.

So the 'supplemental' seems to mean 'supplemental in the context of this search' rather than a clear-cut statement that a page is always supplemental.

Point is? probably none of these site: type queries are really telling you what you want to know - which is 'will people find my pages when they do a search?'

i think you've answered it. thanks.

i do your suggestion, and YES. if we change a little bit the "query", the result will changed too.
i think it is inconsistency of goog.

    again, thanks.

Is there any way to get out of this 'supplemental results' index?

The solution to supplemental results is almost always to get links - deeplinks to the supplemental pages and other pages deep in the site, and high authority / PR links to the site as a whole and to individual sections of the site.

You can have 1000 pages of completely original content but if there aren't enough links to your site the pages will still be supplemental.

Not at all easy to do and I think most large sites will have some supplemental pages (I just checked and google have 1.6 million supplemental results). All you can try and do is reduce their numbers.

Have nice navigation with balanced PR throughout your site as well as many, many links -- followed by this situation, you will be able to build your pages out of the supplemental index. As said above, original pages with deep-links to the inner pages of your site. In order to look natural, the links must lead to the deep pages on your site. This is the drawback of pure automation on Google's part.
