Superintendent Colaluca could hold the key to re-attracting students back into the Youngstown City School District though instructional technology. This particular form of education delivery is inherently less expensive than the traditional methods. Vince Colaluca is the superintendent for Austintown Local Schools, where he and his program coordinator Janet Polish have unveiled one of this region’s most well thought-out alternative school online programs. The Austintown Local School District is an adjoining suburb to the city of Youngstown and it has suffered from student enrollment loss as well. “Polish said the program costs nothing for students and will be a minimal cost to the district through the general fund. She said she can’t give a definitive figure until she knows exactly how many students will take part this school year. Polish said in 2009 about 150 students left the district for other online or charter schools.
