Hi guys, My alexa rank is around 486,000 which is pathetic to say the least. How can I improve it? Also, I'm told that if I install the Alexa toolbar, it might benefit my ranking and all that jazz? I'd like to get your views on this issue. Thanks in advance.
486,000 is not bad really. One of my sites is in the millions. LOL Markas is correct on many levels. The only people that really pay any attention ot the Alexa rank is webmasters, and even then, many only care when they are buying/selling links or a the site itself. Most of the people I know outside of Digital Point don't even know what Alexa is, let alone the meaning of Alexa rank. In fact, most of the people I know outside of Digital Point don't even have a clue about Google's page rank. Just build your site and promote it through whatever means you have. Look past ranking systems and your site will prosper. Though I guess if you really want it raised, then install the spyware alexa toolbar and encourage your readers to do the same.
Like Markas said, Alexa ranking in useless. Install the alexa toolbar and surf your site a few times a day. Get your friends to do the same.
Here: 1) Install Alexa Toolbar and visit your site a few times a day. 2) Use your alexa redirect link instead of your link http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?example.com But the only way to truly have a good number is to get a good number of regular visitors.
Although it can be manipulated very easy and therefor isn't really accurate, many sites use it to see if a blog is succesfull unfortunatly. Btw, use redirect in the url (search in google and you'll find for sure)
A lot of people bad mouth it, but it is used in so many places as a ranking, it is sometimes beneficial to have a decent number.
Some very mainstream ranking publications use Alexa ranking as part of the mix so while you and I know it's meaningless others take it seriously.

Alexa is pretty accurate. It basically mimics my google analytics with like 90% accuracy. But yeah. . don't worry about your alexa because its just something to gauge how much better competitors are than you
Hi ... all the comments re: Alexa = poop are true, if you're in the biz, so to speak. Among general users and a lot of advertisers, it's tops. Other than PR, what readily available, easy-to-use tools exist to evaluate a site? A few, yes, but not too many. My site (see sig) has been wobbling since October. No matter what I do, I can't halt the downward tumble. I've tried everything. My Alexa got worse, quickly, after I tried using software to up "hits," on my site. I sense Alexa can catch the software and penalizes for using it. Don't waste your money is the main point. Until Christmas, when I expected a down turn, the site was averaging about 18,000 uniques and 75,000 page views. Alexa was tumbling, none the less, and nothing would reverse it. I'm tried some oh-so expensive pop-unders and there was an improvement, but it wasn't cost effective. Researching the Alexa issue, I ran across a comment, on a forum, which I think came from directly contacting Alexa. To wit, samples for sites over 100,000 ranking are too unstable and [wild] fluctuations are normal. Ugh! I only partially believe this, as I was able to hold around 160,000 for more than a year and my current struggles are keeping out Alexa below 270,000, although we slip 2-3 times a week. Hope this information helps. Good luck.
Personaly, I've never been worried about Alexa. In fact I cant say I have even looked at it in 8 or 9 months for any of my sites. Backlinks, PR, and Indexed pages are much more relevant in my opinion. A little bit of analytical software for some proof of traffic is sufficient I believe. If a buyer wants strong proof that the traffic is genuine you can always set up an additional log-in for your analytics.
