Directories are certainly not the right place to show ads so you shouldn't expect any of your web savvy visitors to click on these ads.

tough for ads -- people are coming to your site to look through your directory to find targeted sites for their interest -- there is no reason to click an ad to go to another directory type site -- if your traffic is good go for a CPM program that pays you on impressions not clicks....of sell links to make $$

Maybe $1 to $5 for regular permanent links and $3 to $10 for featured permanent links. But you should check this forum http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65 and take a look.

For me, best place is here at DP. On this forum: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=58

There are several popular sites like text-link-ads.com but they charge you a commision (TLA commision is 50%)

I think you should change the position of ads on top and take them inside the box of categories.

Next change the background as that of background of category box and change the color of text, url and link as that of your category links. I mean to say just mixup the ads as if they are category.

Also, you can have THREE text units small in size so that only one add can be shown in one ad unit. And put them in first row of your category table, one in each column. I hope I am able to understand.

And this is my past experience that increase in CTR do not bring down the sales of site.

    Good Luck with directory.

Making the color of your ads blend with the site helps. The AdSense help pages also show you "hot" regions as far as placement for your ads.
