I have only had Inspiron and have had several problems with them ranging from hardware failure to stuck hinges. I only recommend them because of them because of the warranty.

I bought an e-systems laptop from a friend, still with the guarantee, £250. It's not bad for a second machine. I didn't want to spend a lot and it's gone against tax so I'm pleased with the deal. Try asking around before you buy new.
In my experience, Sony Vaio's are the best choice. I have had many laptops and have had the best luck with Vaios. I would avoid HP's, as I have had lots of power supply issues with them.
