Guys, I have bought a domain from namecheap. Now i am in search of a good webhosting site. My site is a kind of informative like wikipedia but with limited contents. Apart from articles, i may be using images and videos if needed. So, which hosting company or plan is recommended?
Right now for my micro niche sites, i am using free webhosting from x10hosting which claims to give unlimited bandwidth and space. Thinking to try xtreemhost which also claims the same. But still i am in confusion if i use these free hosting ( including weebly) or should i go with hostgator or godaddy? Suggestion needed.

If you are serious about website move on from the free hosting. If you're choosing between hostgator and godaddy definitely go with HostGator.

First off, there is no such thing as unlimited disk space or bandwidth. That should be the first red flag. That goes for free hosting or paid hosting.

Secondly, how much do you value your site? A business site or reasonably important site should never, ever be run on free hosting. While there are plenty of reliable free hosts out there, paid hosts tend to be a lot more reliable. If it's just a personal site and you don't mind downtime here and there, there's nothing wrong with sticking with free hosting.

Thirdly, avoid GoDaddy. They are great for domains, horrible for hosting. Look around and you'll see the complaints. If Hostgator and Godaddy are the only two paid hosts you are considering, there is no comparison between the two. You will be FAR happier with Hostgator.

Thankx for the suggestion guys. Actually i am in a mission of creating a smaller site and gradually develop it accordingly. So, until it becomes successful i am thinking its ok for using free hosting, then later in future, to upgrade the hosting plans accordingly. Therefore i am asking suggestions.

I think Tripod/Lycos as some type of free hosting. There is no MySQL/PHP though. But really if you're serious in any way about having a successful website, you should try investing in a real web host. Also I wouldn't consider "unlimited web hosting" as a red flag like the earlier person stated. Even though it's not true, it's something that Web Hosting companies do to stay ahead of the competition. It's "unlimited web hosting" within reason. You don't need to really worry about picking a paid hosting company. Most reputable companies out there will run a small or medium site without any issues. Once you have a bigger website then you may need to worry about which host to use or upgrading to a VPS/dedicated server. However, you're more likely to have issues with a free web host.

You can check out this article on finding a web host if you want to learn more in detail.
