The keyword should be having low competition and high global search. The short tail keyword is better than long tail keyword. So you can use this tool easily to search your website keywords.
Don't bother building links to a forum; if you spend your time building your user base instead you'll find that they produce and share a ton of content for you.
Why don't you try google addword and if you need traffic then you must bring your keywords in a top rank on search engine.
Put main keyword of your forum/site in Google Adwords keyword tool and you would find many keywords, try to understand each keywords in terms of local/global searches, competition, CPC etc.
Do a search on performing keyword research to get some tips. I think that since you are the one promoting the site that you have a clearer idea than any of us what the site should be about.
