Suggest some cPanel alternatives for VPS

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by A_ManojKumar, Nov 13, 2013.

Just bought an semi-managed VPS and I would like to install a Web hosting management CP for easily creating databases, file transfers, adding users etc. I am not going to install cPanel just yet.

Do you recommend anything and why?

    Thanks :)

If the control panel needs to be free, it seems that Kloxo is the panel with the most features. However the project was not supported for a long time.

    You could try Kloxo-MR:

    https://github.com/mustafaramadhan/kloxo/tree/dev

    Another alternative is ehcp:

    http://www.ehcp.net

    It's new design looks good:

zPanel is way too easy and user-friendly but I have heard it is vulnerable to security exploits. Can anyone explain why so?

A_ManojKumar, major security exploits in zPanel take too much time to be fixed, some of them are even ignored. I know that zPanel looks great, but the security is not the best.

I would be happy to see other people comments on this matter - as I remember they recently completely rewrote the panel.

zpanel has had tons of tons of security exploits in the past, and the developers have been basically unwilling to fix it. I would certainly stay away.

As someone told above, Directadmin is good. It's really fast and lightweight.

I would take a look at InterWorx. It's a great alternative to cPanel and Plesk. It's very intuitive and the staff over there really knows there stuff. There is actually an interesting talk going on right now at WHT about InterWorx - http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?p=8913490#post8913490 Good luck! Edit: forgot to add that InterWorx does a free trial, so it's definitely worth giving a test spin.

zPanel isn't secure. Better wait another year and see how it does then.

If you're looking for a free panel, I can recommend ISPConfig, which is pretty much the best free one, it's advanced and secure and offers nice stuff like PHP-FPM and NGINX as a web server. Alternatively you can check out Kloxo-MR, which is a new fork of Kloxo which looks very promising. It's still quite new, so I'm not sure if it's secure enough just yet.

Yes, many recommend ISPConfig. Will definitely give that a shot! Is there a way to include file manager with ISPConfig? So Kloxo belongs to you? :D

Kloxo does not belong to me. The original developer shot himself in 2007 and since then the Kloxo development went down the drain. It was slow, no major updates anymore, it had a lot of bugs, etc. So only a few months ago one of the new lead developers decided to "fork" (like copy and continue under another name) Kloxo and so he created "Kloxo-MR". You can find it here: https://github.com/mustafaramadhan/kloxo/tree/rpms
It looks more cPanel-like, so if you like cPanel, you might prefer the Kloxo-MR interface over ISPConfig (although I would still recommend ISPConfig over Kloxo-MR, because it's just more stable). If you want to go with ISPConfig, you can find an easy installer script for it here: https://github.com/dclardy64/ISPConfig-3-Debian-Installer (only works with Debian, but I would recommend Debian anyway). You can find instructions on how to add a file manager to ISPConfig 3 here: http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58296 That's just what a quick search brought up - maybe there are better/more options.

PS: I just noticed I had a typo in my previous post. I wanted to write "check out Kloxo-MR", not "check our Kloxo-MR". :D
