Download the Google suggestor tool: http://www.mediafire.com/?zzrznioo2jw enter your keyword/keywords and hit Suggest, after it returns the results hit Suggest again, and again. Save your work work often as it tends to crash after a while. Also use Google's External keyword tool - use the URL feature and enter the websites from the SERP's results for your keyword. Save the results as a text file and plug them into Google's External tool, but this time use "Descriptive words and phrases instead of the URL, and paste your keywords into the field (a little at a time). Then set it to "Exact" and sort by search count. You might also want to show the CPC. For the best keywords download MarketSamurai (30 free trial), TrafficTravis (free version), or use the Firefox browser (SEOQuake addon) to see how tough the competition is.

What is your plan for the site? It's possible you put the cart before the horse if you didn't create a plan prior to building the site.
When you use the keyword tools that are suggested above you want to make sure that you don't start off going after words that are too competitive. You want to start targeting the longtail and transition after you start seeing traction on those.
You don't need to download Googles tool. Just Google "Google Keyword" and you will be taken directly to their keyword tool.

MartinKim makes a valid point. Although it is valuable to optimize for keywords that have a high search volume, the most common words are probably sought after by many competitors. First page placement for these words may be out of your reach, especially since you are a beginner SEO. Also, if you plan to use these keywords for a PPC campaign, you might want to pay close attention to the estimated average CPC.
