What kind of old-school elements do you like? Are you thinking of retro web design styles, minimal layouts, or something else? And will your portfolio focus on a specific field?
I've had 3 websites thus far, all social sites. The most successful had around 80 members. Too much work and frustration involved. I finally threw in the towel when I was threatened with copyright infringement and harrassment. But good luck to you with whatever path you choose to go down.
