Gardner's themes are pretty but they are not that easy to manage on the backend. And his ad placement for affiliate marketing is a pure afterthought.
If you want to find one for free, perhaps one of these eight will help. But if you can fork out a few a dollars (okay not few) I would definitely recommend Thesis. It can be customized A-LOT and it's just go heaps of features. Alex (my blogging partner) designs custom themes too, he designed our current theme as you can see on our blog.
