Hostgator is OK, and I use nice and cheap WebhostZA.com You should spilt registrar and host also due to security reasons.
Hostgator is so nice hosting, but I recommened hosting from ScalaHosting or PacificHost. This is because I tried and 'd like it.

Have a look at hostmonster, I'm with them for a long time, although they advertise as unlimited space & bandwidth, server doesn't seem overcrowded, response time and ftp speed is good.
