    Hi sysadmins here,

I'm in the process of building a server and stuck at finding a compatible motherboard that works flawlessly out of the box with CentOS 4/5 OS. I've heard and have experienced issues with some motherboards earlier running linux, so please put in your inputs to have a stable system.

    Proposed configuration :

    Core2Duo E4500
    4GB DDR2 667 MHz RAM
    WD 250GB SATA HDD
    CentOS 4/5 64bit

    Shortlisted Motherboards :

    GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L
    GIGABYTE GA-73VM-S2
    GIGABYTE GA-73PVM-S2
    GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G

Actually, it turns out to be if the newer intel/etc. chipset based boards are compatible with CentOS 4/5 64bit or not.

If you have first hand experiences with these chipsets or boards, feel free to share. Also, let me know if you had any issues with such boards or are running smoothly.

    Thanks in advance.

You want Gigabyte only? In that case, I have no idea, cause I use only Supermicro board for our systems, but the price difference is hundred of dollars. Can you afford it? It's worth, believe me, if you want a stable system.

Well, I'm looking for a cheap yet stable platform, not enterprise class hardware.

    More inputs welcome... :)

You can use most desktop motherboard, as CentOS is compatible with most mobos. You can also consider Asrock, Asus, MSI mobos which will work just as well as say Intel mobos.

Make sure you choose a mobo that is quite popular, has good reviews and been around for a few months, and use CentOS 5 instead of 4. 9/10 times there should be no compatibility problems.

Thanks. I'm open to all popular brands though.

Can anyone share experiences with a particular mainboard (recent chipsets) you have up and running with centos?

Try the S5 as I have one and its very good, Also as I have been onto over 20 websites its benchmarked the best in sound/ performance/ etc. Also as it was built for AMD its now been released for INTEL.

I can also tell you that Supermicro motherboards will work better (at least in theory). And make sure you're installing the latest CentOS version 5.1

Yes, I'll install centos 5.1, but need a working desktop class board for core2quad box now.
