    Normally rank of website will get down, because your website is not comply with Google guideline. Follow below step to find out the reason.

    1] Check whether duplicate pages were mistakenly index on Google.
    2] It may happen if your website have many ads on top of the website. [Above the fold google guideline]
    3] Update your sitemap and robots.txt file.
    4] Try to find out error message in webmaster tool.
    5] Checker whether someone copied your content.

    yes those points are good but there could be another problem of hacking and put unrelated spammy keyword in page check google web master tool go to keyword section check any unrelated keyword.

    The new Penguin update looks especially at spammy content. So this could be through mass backlink building or keyword spamming/stuffing. Also website's are being penalized for not linking to relevant websites.

    Please keep patience, this may be due to Google dance, if after 1 week your site remains down then focus on what you change to the site last 1 month. Remove if any backlink you created last 1 month does not satisfy the Google rules. Hope your site will be on top again.
