sudden inundation of followers

I am a photographer and not too long ago started a new venture moving from head shots in NYC to landscapes and cityscapes in Boston, therefore my twitter situation is very new… I don’t have many followers. I normally read the profiles of anyone that follows me before I follow them back. I also make lists, and put everyone in the proper category as best I can. I have less than 200 followers and up until I had maybe 50 followers I was following only other photo people. Recently I started following a few social media folks, then a motivational one or two, business development… this was about a month ago, maybe. Well, all of the sudden I am being inundated with followers, from social medial categories mostly, but others too. The amazing thing is that almost every single person that follows me (and they appear to come from all walks of life with regard to charisma) - these tweeters seem to all have tens of thousands of followers, some of them hundreds of thousands.

Im blown away with this concept, I mean I realize that NOBODY is following me because they give a rip about me or my photography, but I am very curious about it and thought I would take a stab at asking someone that is somewhat of an expert on Twitter, hence my question of how and why this is happening??? Should someone in my position follow these people back, should you screen them in some other way? It’s beginning to become somewhat of a protracted job every day.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
