Such thing as Meta Title Tag?

Discussion in 'HTML & Website Design' started by Breakpoint, Jan 3, 2008.

I have looked at some websites and see a meta title tag in the <head> area and I am not talking about <title> tage.

This looks like <meta name="title" content="Put title in here" />

Is this meta tag valid and useful at all in SEO?

this title meta tag is neither useful nor valid ....
it is FAR beyond question or discussion:

title meta tag is a MUST and anyone NOT having it has missed the most basic beginners lessons in web design!

Hans, you're totally not clear here.
I've never used it, so why is it a must? It doesn't even show up on the accessibility check page (whereas "author" and "keywords" does... not sure why author is important to anyone anyway...)

I always use it, and it has never hurt me :p

@ Stomme Poes: maybe the author would give people more confidence (or not) that the website they're viewing is providing quality content?

No I mean I checked a site once on this accessiblity page (you can check the link from any page on the CSS Zen Garden). There are like three levels. One of the "warnings" that came was, no author meta and no keywords meta. So I don't think it has anything to do with confidence that I can guess.

Then why did you say it was neither useful or valid?

Why would we put something on our sites that is niether useful or valid?

because meta title is BEYOND discussion, the MOST basic step to SEO - hence a MUST - far above usefulness or validity. a site without meta title has is ZERO SEO.

Well, the <title> tag is not a meta tag.

The author here specifically points out at this:
    <meta name="title" content="Put title in here" />
    and NOT at
    <title>Put title in here</title>

This is the first time I hear about <meta name="title">, so 99.9% it's not valid and will give you a warning when trying to validate your html.
