    mini sites are widely used to rank targeted keywords for parent site.
    you can create free blogs to start with.

    Try to create your mini site with free blogs first and track it.. but yeah most of my mini sites are targeted to the main site as well.

    Yes, i have seen many successful squeeze pages
    One such example is scrapebox squeeze page...
    Go for it if you have a solid product/service to offer
    & you will see it converting real well

    You can also create one on freewebs for specific content that you want separated from your website.
