I just read an article that submitting your website to many directories or small search engines will make NO difference to major search engine.
    http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hlrm=en&answer=35291

However, there are other articles said that website submission will benefit search engine more rather than visitors at least help some major search engine to index your website. I am confusing now.... Plz help. Thanks in advance.

Directories provide backlinks, which is a plus when trying to rank your site. Submitting to small search engines probably won't do anything for you, but if it's free, you certainly won't lose anything by submitting..

I guess you are right. And I know the difference between search engine and directories, but if you can list some major free directories, I would be deeply grateful. Thank you!

Yes, directories provide backlinks, but what is their importance for Google? I will tell you - it is much, much less than backlinks from a relative website. But, if you can't effort such backlinks, the directories are not bad source.

Getting a backlink from directory site is okay if it is do follow. It will be grateful if you get authoritative link from sites which are related to your niche. The number of outbound links from any site that links your site should not be too many.

Now I finally understand, most directories need you to add a backlinks to their directories first on your home page or they won't add a backlinks to your site. The deal is quite unfair.
But the most disgusting thing is some directories even claims they won't index your site if your site has already add a mutual backlinks to other directories.
Therefore, I don't think we have to add site to directories. The page ranks they return sometimes is even lower than we provide to them for their PR has been distributed to other thousands sites.
In short, they can't help you when your PR is down & they won't neglect you when your site becomes popular. My suggestion is that if your site PR is below 2, adding your website to some directories might help. Otherwise, there is no point doing so.

From what I have read over the last year you should get 10 - 30 links from the better directories. Then spend your time on more worthwhile link building. From what I can tell a lot of the professional SEO's do not bother to submit to SE's because the better ones will find you in a week or so anyway.

Ya, the small SEs are worthless, no SEO benefit and you'll not get direct traffic either. Stick to the vertically aligned, high quality human reviewed directories and but don't overbalance your inbound links from just directories. SEOMoz and others have some excellent listings ranked by importance/relevance. Backlink value can be decent, it depends. If you're a brand new site, it may assist jump starting some indexing of your site. Aim for pages / directories that are thematically aligned to your site. Don't force it...

Its true that directories provide back links. Submitting to search engines is also worthy because once if your site gets indexed by either of search engine then you get traffic from that search engine daily. In essence, from rank point of view directory submission is useful and from traffic point of view search engine submission is useful.
