Submitting your site to free(?) affiliate directories

I've submitted to quite a few free affiliate directories and had little success(for about a week). I have a B2B service to market and am wondering if I should start paying to submit for better results. I've so far had only one real response and it was from the directory itself about setting up a multi-tier program. Should I sit tight and wait, or bite the bullet and part with the cash?(Adwords is already sucking me dry, but is effective)

Ehubert, you can't have too many backlinks if you want natural traffic.
However, article submission is one of the fastest methods to get traffic from article directories and natural traffic at the same time.
All methods should take some time, but remember that SEO is an ongoing work.
