I'll be launching my site in about 3-4 weeks but would like to know whether it is necessary to have a live site before you can or should start submitting to directories. Thanks in advance.

    Hi

it may be an idea to do it no more than a day in advance before launch mainly for directories which take a lot of time to add new links anyway. I personally would wait untill my site was live before submitting as directories wouldnt add non-working links, normally :p

Thanks for the tip; I will keep that in mind. Guess I'll just have to be patient. It's not there is nothing at the URL; right now it's just the logo and an under construction message.

Yes, its surely advisable to have a website with a start up page least, which should give a complete idea to the Directory Editor so he can decide whether to accept or reject the website which you will go for submissions.

Though, its never mandatory. If you simply wish to start with a small website.

Your site must be lives first before the link be submitted to any link directory or search engine.

Not only live , no under constuction part. They site should be fully functional . I would suggest you to read some submission guidelines in reputed web directories.

This will give you better idea to prepare well

I agree with them. Wait till your site is finished/live before submitting to directories. You can never tell when they'll review your site. You don't want to be rejected by high PR directories.

Wait for your site to be live before submitting your site to directories. Even your site is not yet indexed you can already start submitting.

It's advisable to submit your site to directories and put your site as a sig in forums for fastest indexing

You must wait for your site be live, because directories are approved by human. it may be possible that directory admin will disapprove your website or BANNED. than you may lose Quality directory.

If your site is under construction, many directory owners will reject your submission.

But some directory owner gives user free access to the listing. Anyway please follow the rules of thumb.

Yes, most directories won't accept and under construction website, so check the rules.

Ideally, the sooner you get in, the sooner you build incoming links, apart from the fact that you are of very little use to any visitor with a practically non existent website.

It would also allow the site to start out already indexed.

My advice would be to make a quick and simple start up page, with the main features of the website described and a date for launch which you have to stick to at all costs.

That might be considered acceptable by some directories and would provide caching by SEs for the more or less right keywords and it would give you a slight advantage compared to those that don't submit.

But DON'T waste time submitting to many directories becaus ethe time would be better spent building the website and putting it online ASAP, or at least at the announced time.

    Good luck!
